Though
purely decorative and aiming simply at being attractive, Nicole
Darcy' s new paintings learnedly interweave
various artistic influences. It is without any doubt her passion for native American and African
textile arts which has to a great extent brought about their aspect. But
if you really try to trace the sources of her inspiration, you
are
running the risk of penetrating into an
inextricable maze. On her
inner loom, her enthusiasm for Gaston Chaissac, Paul Klee or Joaquim
Torres-Garcia boldly intertwines with her insatiable curiosity
for the Maya glyphs, the Kuba abstract
art or the heraldry of medieval Europe. On
coatings of sand or plaster, Nicole Darcy' s visual thought joyfully multiplies
signs: irrational numbers, chemical formulas, alchemical symbols, letters,
ideograms, logos, abstract patterns
or naive representations. And it is
thanks to a constant preoccupation with
aesthetic purification that she gives birth to
an ordered world out
of this juxtaposition of
disparate elements, and that for our greater delight.
