FTP uploading/importing
Posted on: February 28, 2000, 1:31 a.m.
This new feature allows members to ftp into the server containing Home Free and upload their files. Please note: this is not true ftp access
To keep the 3 most important features of Home Free intact, the files can not be uploaded to the users directory directly. Users will upload to one directory, not accessible from the web, then using Home Free's file manager, import their uploaded files into their home directory. Doing the transfers this way will make sure the following stays intact. 1. Only allowable file types and names are uploaded, 2. Users stay within their space limit, and 3. Headers and Footers are added to html files.
There are 3 configuration items for allowing ftp to be used. The first is a check box that will turn ftp on or off, second is an option to have the FTP to be set up as an option per account. The last is a text box to contain the path to where the users ftp file base will be. If the path you entered for the ftp path is "/home/ftp/homefree" and a user account name is "test" then they should upload files to "/home/ftp/homefree/test".
Home Free does not and will not set up the actual ftp accounts. This will have to be done manually. There seems to be two ways that we can see to set up ftp accounts for your users.
1. Set up anonymous ftp on your server for Home Free users to use. Then then log in and create a directory the same as their account name and upload their files to this directory.
2. Set up regular ftp login and accounts for a user, setting their home directory to your ftp path plus their account name.
Once the users upload their files to the Home Free server, the should log into the Home Free file manager, select the directory they wish to have the files imported into, and press the import ftp files located above the browser upload buttons. Once this button is pressed they will be shown a listing of files they just uploaded, and have a check box to select to import the files to the current directory. Once the files are selected they will be imported into the selected directory and checked for size, file type and file name, plus have headers and footers added to html files. The imported files will then be deleted from the ftp directory.
At this time Home Free does not monitor file size or the length of time files have been in the ftp directories. Currently this is left up to those running Home Free to do manually, though this feature will be added in the future.
